Progesterone cream may ease dry eye symptoms
The anti-inflammatory properties of transdermal progesterone may be useful in relieving dry eye symptoms, particularly in those patients who do not respond well to treatment with testosterone cream, according to a study presented here at the American Academy of Optometry meeting. Researcher Charles Connors, OD, sought to determine whether progesterone cream could be beneficial to a larger population for whom testosterone is not a viable treatment. Read more.

Progesterone cream successfully treated dry eye in study
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A topical cream containing 15% progesterone can effectively treat dry eye syndrome, according to a study presented here. "The data suggest the anti-inflammatory properties of progesterone may be useful for dry eye treatments," said Charles G. Connor, PhD, OD, in a poster presentation here at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting. Read more.

Dry Eye Syndrome
In the last decade, it has become well-recognized that sex hormones such as androgens, estrogens, and progesterones help regulate the function of the lacrimal and meibomian glands. An imbalance in these hormones may lead to DES and irritation to the ocular surface. Perceiving the eye to be under attack, the body’s immune system produces T-lymphocytes, immune cells that destroy infection. These T cells in turn release proteins known as cytokines, which cause inflammation on the ocular surface. The proper effects of these hormones are critical to glandular secretions which comprise tear film and also determine who is susceptible to Dry Eye Syndrome. Read more (PDF)
