A Personal Message to the Reader

FORTY PERCENT of the American people - four of every ten children and adults - today åre suffering needlessly and many åre dying for lack of an ingredient vital for health.

Is the ingredient unknown? No. Or unavailable? No.

For years, medicine has recognized the role of the deficiency in some areas of health and disease and has had clues to its great importance in many other areas.

But the knowledge too often has not been used -and still is not being used - because of the unreliablity of laboratory tests that have failed to show the deficiency even when doctors could see its manifestations clearly enough in patients before them. And while laboratory tests have erred and have misled both doctors and patients, patients have suffered.

After spending 35 years of a medical career with the problem and with thousands of patients who have had it - and with learning from my own and from the studies of others how the problem can be recognized readily and then treated easily, effectively, and inexpensively - my purpose in writing this book is to alert you and as many others as I can reach so that a powerful but largely unused weapon for many of our ills will no longer be overlooked.

Broda O. Barnes, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Barnes passed away on November l, 1988, at age 82. His work transformed the lives of many of his patients. People who had suffered for years and spent large sums of money on treatment were finally able to find relief with the simple, effective methods advocated by Dr. Barnes. With his second wife Helen, he established the Broda O. Barnes, M.D. Research Foundation to continue his research.
