My lovely friend was diagnosed and medicated for ADHD. When I met her, I immediately noticed her goiter and when she told me she was on ADHD medicine I questioned the wisdom of adding a contraindicated medicine to her system when she had a thyroid problem. "How do you know I have a thyroid issue?" she asked.

Her mother, mother's sister and mother's mother have all had their thyroid removed due to nodules.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cried, but rather contrary to principle I asked her to please stop the ADHD medicine immediately. And then I took her to the gp... which didn't go very well. Gp got really defensive and didn't even know that ADHD medicine is contraindicated in thyroid patients!!!

Anyway, the GP did the FIRST EVER actually PHYSICAL examination of the patient and like me, found the goiter. My friend was sent for a scan and has now had radioactive treatment for the nodules. She's been offered T4 only treatment once her thyroid is dead. But don't worry - we shall kick some arse if the doctor tries to give substandard care - again.

Unfortunately, I am not a Type 1 thyroid patient. I.e. my thyroid is fine. But my cellular hormone level is not. I am, as most people in Denmark, iodine deficient and have rT3 dominance. So, I also have a mental disorder (!) but unlike my friend, I remain untreated. But then, sometimes being untreated is better than being treated. How being nuked with radioactive matter is the only treatment she was offered I shall never know... it's a travesty!

Anyway, mentally ill with fibromyalgia and depression, I fight on.
