Hei Merete.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It's another hormone problem that many women of childbearing age have. In fact, many of us have both PCO and hypothyroidism.
Symptoms include facial hair growth (chin, upper lip), a line of dark hair growing between navel and pubic area, irregular cycles, infertility, frequent miscarriage, male pattern balding, uncontrollable cystic acne, depression and mood swings, rapid unexplained weight gain with difficulty losing and higher than normal rate of obesity. There is usually a higher than average testosterone and/or androgen level in the blood and an ultrasound often reveals multiple cysts on the ovaries, which are follicles caused by incomplete ovulation. High cholesterol levels are also frequently observed. Long term risks include coronary disease, adult-onset diabetes and endometrial cancer.
The most common treatments until recently were birth control pills to regulate cycles and alleviate acne and hair growth and androgen blocking meds (ie. Spironalactone or Aldactone). Fertility drugs are used to stimulate ovulation in women desiring pregnancy and sometimes surgery to remove part of the ovaries in an effort to release mature eggs.
It's now believed that high serum insulin levels due to insulin resistance are the culprit. We are also seeing indications that insulin resistance may be the key element in the development of adult-onset diabetes in men & women and early male pattern baldness in men. It is also suspected that a tendancy towards this disorder is passed from father to daughter. A warning sign that you may be susceptible is having male blood relatives who have lost their hair early in life (ie. early 20's to late 40's).
New treatments for PCO that are proving effective are diabetes medications that reduce insulin levels and increase insulin sensitivity, like Metformin and Rezulin. These drugs seem to indirectly cause the hormones to balance, symptoms to diminish or disappear completely, weight loss is better achieved, regular ovulation and menstruation and some women even manage to get pregnant faster than with other treatments alone.
