Subcutaneous administration of sodium l-thyroxine to patients with hypothyroidism.

Abstract
Two patients with primary hypothyroidism are described in whom an euthyroid condition could not be achieved by oral administration of L-thyroxine, L-triiodothyronine or desiccated thyroid. Daily subcutaneous injections of L-thyroxine normalized the thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels in the blood and the patients became euthyroid.

Once-weekly intravenous L-thyroxine replacement in hypothyroidism.

Abstract
A 58-year-old female patient with gastrointestinal complications also had primary hypothyroidism which proved therapy-resistant against high-dosage oral replacement with L-thyroxine or an L-thyroxine/L-triiodothyronine combination. Administration of four intravenous injections each of 2 mg L-thyroxine given at weekly intervals brought about a clinical and chemical euthyroid state. Thereafter it was possible to adopt an oral L-thyroxine replacement procedure without complications. Intravenous replacement of L-thyroxine and later transfer to oral medication appears a superior and safer method than the daily subcutaneous or intramuscular administration described hitherto.

A case of refractory hypothyroidism requiring daily intravenous thyroxine.

Abstract
Most patients with hypothyroidism respond to administration of oral thyroxine at a maintenance dose of 50-175 micrograms/day. This is the first documented patient with post-operative hypothyroidism who required about 10 times the standard dose of thyroxine, and whose symptoms only resolved when intravenous thyroxine was administered daily. Our findings support the benefits of daily intravenous therapy with thyroxine in this case.
